While Germany was the most successful country in terms of the medals it earned, the top athlete was Jesse Owens, an African American. He won four gold medals in sprinting and long jump. His triumph exposed the Nazi ideology as a farce, and it was one of the all-time greatest moments in sports.
Rocky Marciano Remaining Undefeated
Rocky Marciano is the only heavyweight champion, a title he held from 1952 to 1956, to retire undefeated.

He had 49 career fights and won them all, with 43 ending in knockouts, giving him one of the highest knockout-to-win percentages ever, at 87.76%. Born Rocco Francis Marchegiano, Marciano is still considered to be one of the all-time greatest heavyweight fighters.
Roger Bannister Breaking the Four-Minute Mile
Prior to 1954, nobody had ever run a mile in less than four minutes. It was Roger Bannister, a British medical student who only could fit in 45 minutes of training a day due to his academic requirements, who broke down this barrier, coming in at three minutes and 59.4 seconds.
